French at Howletch Lane Primary School: Intent
At Howletch Lane Primary school we want all our pupils to
- To build a MFL curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which enables children access to wider curriculum and prepare children to be a global citizen now
- Develop resilience in language learning, as well as an enjoyment of it through a progressive scheme of work focussing on all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing
- Foster an understanding of the relevance of and the benefit of learning another language in today’s world
- Acquire language learning strategies for the memorisation and retrieval of the new language learnt
- Develop the skill of how to use a bi-lingual dictionary to decode unfamiliar language
- Be able to manipulate language to speak and write sentences creatively, using knowledge of grammar and key structures
- Have a good grasp of the key sounds of the French language and their corresponding graphemes and be able to apply this knowledge when speaking, listening and reading aloud
- Develop a deeper understanding of the cultural differences and similarities between their own country and the countries where the language is spoken
- Demonstrate progress in learning French and work towards or meet the targets of the Key Stage 2 Programme of Study for Languages
- Demonstrate a readiness for language learning in Key Stage 3
At Howletch Lane, we follow the Rachel Hawkes Scheme of work for French (www.rachelhawkes.com) but adapt it to our curriculum and the needs of the children.
Implementation
Our curriculum offers a comprehensive program which supports pupils spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life, set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002. PSHE at Howletch Lane Primary School is taught through the Happy Centred Schools Programme. Five Core themes are the basis of teaching and learning which focuses on the growth of resilience, self-confidence, coping skills, and ability to form positive and healthy relationships whilst reflecting on their progress and success along the way.

Impact
PSHE at Howletch, equips children with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, creative and accomplished, responsible and balanced lives. A critical component of the curriculum provides opportunities for children to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes in a respectful manner. As part of a whole- school approach, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes pupils needs to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. It also makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour, and safety and their emotional well-being.
PSHE in the Early Years:
PSHE sits within the areas of personal, social and emotional development and understanding of the world. From an early age, the children at Howletch Primary School learn to develop respectful communication and they are aware of the feelings and wishes of others. From Pre-School age the children participate in weekly Happy-Centred Schools social circle time. The continuous provision is planned to provide the children with the opportunity to further develop the skills that they have learnt from Happy-Centred Schools and then to use them independently. The youngest learners in the school are exposed too and participate in upholding our British Values. The children are encouraged to listen, be kind to each other and share with others.
